Abstract:
This collection consists of two letters from Union soldier Jacob Rowland to his sister, Olive. The first letter, dated January 26, 1865, is sent from Knoxville, Tenn., where Rowland reports of "...quiet times here in Knoxville just now occasionally review as inspection we moved our camp last Tuesday. We were on the south side of the river about 1 1/2 miles from the city. Now we are quartered inside of the breast works right in the suburbs..." The second letter, dated February 20, 1865, is addressed from Camp Nelson -- a Union Army Supply Depot -- located in Jessamine County, Kentucky.

Biography / History

Born around 1838 in Ohio, Jacob Rowland was a member of the 2nd Regiment Ohio Artillery. Consisting of 12 batteries and 2,400 men, the regiment was organized in 1863 under Colonel Horatio Gibson. The regiment garrissoned forts in Kentucky and Tennessee; they engaged in battle under Generals Stoneman and Ammen. The regiment was mustered out August 23, 1865.


Collection Scope and Content Note

This collection consists of two letters from Union soldier Jacob Rowland of the 2nd Regiment Ohio Artillery to his sister, Olive. The first letter, dated January 26, 1865, is sent from Knoxville, TN. The letter, in part, reads, "...quiet times here in Knoxville just now occasionally review as inspection we moved our camp last Tuesday. We were on the south side of the river about 1 1/2 miles from the city. Now we are quartered inside of the breast works right in the suburbs..." The second letter, also dated 1865, is addressed from Camp Nelson -- a Union Army Suppy Depot -- located in Jessamine County, Kentucky. It reads, "Sister Olive...I am well with the exception of a bad cold...one of our sergeants said to me today you are as fat as a cuss. I do not know how fat that is..."
