A small loose piece of paper -- possibly a prescription or doctor's note -- is included among the pages.

Biography / History

The 117th Infantry was organized in 1862 at Camp Butler, Illinois by Colonel Risdon M. Moore. On November 11, 1982 the company was moved to Memphis, TN where they remained on duty until July 5, 1863.

Their service included: Duty at Memphis, TN until July 5, 1863; Meridian Campaign, 1863; Red River expedition, March 1863; assisted in capture of Fort DeRussey, March 1864; battle of Pleasant Hill, April 1864; engagements at Cloutierville, Cane River, Bayou Rapids, and Yellow Bayou May 1864; took part in driving Marmaduke from Chicot Lake and Columbia, Ark.; arrived back in Memphis, June 1864; Tupelo Campaign, June 1894; Oxford Campaign and Hurricane Creek, August 1864; Battle of Nashville, December 1864; Spanish Fort, March-April, 1865; took Fort Blakely, April 1865; returned to Camp Butler where regiment was mustered by Captain James A. Hall in August 1865.
