Biography / History

George Wilson and partner George Raulston published Tennessee's first newspaper, the Knoxville Gazette in 1791. After the newspaper, and partnership, dissolved, Wilson moved on to Jonesborough where he started the Washington Newspaper and Advertiser ; the paper was primarily a political weekly with little local coverage; however, advertisements were plentiful, hence the name. In addition to the Washington Newspaper and Advertiser , Wilson's press also produced Jonesborough's first non-newspaper imprint, Thomas Embree's 1801 pamphlet, "Remarks on an Act of the Assembly of the State of Tennessee, pass in the year 1799, giving a single justice jurisdiction of fifty dollars." Wilson's paper ceased publication in 1804 when he moved back to Knoxville. The town would be without a newspaper for the next fifteen years.
