Biography / History

Rev. B.W. Chidlaw was an army chaplain during the Civil War. He went to hospitals to offer religious comfort to the sick, wounded, and dying. Although part of the Union army, he often cared for Confederate prisoners and troops.


Collection Scope and Content Note

This collection contains one letter, dated 1860, and two sets of personal notes of Reverend B.W. Chidlaw. The personal notes, dated 1861 and 1865, relate to Childlaw's experiences as an army chaplain during the Civil War. The letter, dated 1860 and written on Office Dayton and Michigan Rail Road Co. letterhead, was written to Chidlaw from Brother Smith. The letter likely contained a rail road ticket, and it is an invitation to Smith's home. The first page of personal notes, dated 1861, recalls Chidlaw's work in Civil War hospitals, numbers of wounded, distribution of clothing and other goods, etc. The second s[age of notes, dated 1865, contains notes about 1863 and 1864. In this paper, Chidlaw mentions General Hood's defeat and the numbers of sick and wounded. He mentions Brother Smith and his wife, noting their dedicated and faithful service in caring for the sick and wounded.
