This collection contains the diary/scrapbook of Julius E. Thomas, a soldier with Company F of the 1st Tennessee Cavalry (Union) during the Civil War. The diary entries span from June 1, 1863 through August 4, 1864, and describe Thomas' day-to-day activities as well as his travels thoughout the state of Tennessee. In the entries from early 1864, he describes his movements in East Tennessee, mentioning Strawberry Plains, Morristown, Sevierville, and Dandridge.

Biography / History

Julius E. Thomas served as 2nd Sergant and Chief Bugler of Company F, 1st Tennessee Cavalry (Union). The 1st Tennessee Cavalry organized at Camp Dennison, Ohio, November, 1862, from the 4th Tennessee Infantry. Attached to Camp Dennison, Ohio, to December, 1862. Reserve Brigade, Cavalry Division, Army of the Cumberland, to January, 1863. 1st Brigade. 1st Cavalry Division, Army of the Cumberland, to November 1864. 1st Brigade, 1st Division, Cavalry Corps, Military Division Mississippi, to January, 1865. District of Middle Tennessee, department of the Cumberland, to June, 1865.


Collection Scope and Content Note

This collection contains the diary/scrapbook of Julius E. Thomas, a soldier with Company F of the 1st Tennessee Cavalry (Union) during the Civil War. The diary entries span from June 1, 1863 through August 4, 1864. The diary is not in strict chronological order.

In the diary, Thomas describes his actions, travelling throughout the state of Tennessee. In the entries from early 1864, he describes his movements in East Tennessee. He writes of foraging and skirmishes in the area. Specific places mentioned include Strawberry Plains, Morristown, Sevierville, and Dandridge.

Aside from diary entries, the collection contains poetry, camp songs, newspaper clippings, and illustrations.
