John Shellenberger was born in approximately 1829 in Ohio. When the Civil War broke out, he was living in Ohio with his wife and three children and working as a carpenter. During the war, Shellenberger served with the 64th Ohio Infantry. The unit mustered in on November 9, 1861, and served in Kentucky until February of 1862. They were then moved to Tennessee, where they participated in the battle of Shiloh, and to Mississippi, where they took part in the siege of Corinth. They were subsequently assigned to the Middle Tennessee Campaign (June-July 1863), the Chickamauga Campaign (August-September 1863), and the Atlanta Campaign (May-September 1864). While serving in the Nashville Campaign (November-December 1864), the unit fought in the Battle of Franklin (November 30, 1864). The unit mustered out in Texas on December 3, 1865. After the war, Shellenberger returned to his family in Ohio.
