Collection Scope and Content Note

A letter written from a F. W. Claybrooke to "My Dear Brother" on March 15, 1858. The sender location not known, but it was sent to Louisa County, Virginia. The letter details some advice for crop harvesting and the such. Also in the letter is a mention of the price of slaves.

Claybrooke writes that the value placed upon the slaves is too low. He goes on to say, talking about a seller of slaves, "How in the name of conscience he could have undertaken to reduce the prices of them after they had been valued by disinterested men." He also writes in the letter some advice to his brother about dealing with a former business partner. Additionally, he tells his brother to avoid using tobacco.

Also featured is a postscript to the letter featured on a small square of paper. Claybrooke goes into some more detail about the business partner, and why his brother should avoid the partner.
