Fred Hart was born in Nuremburg, Germany in 1946 to an American soldier and a German woman. His family moved to Knoxville in 1948. He was drafted by the Army to go to Vietnam in 1966. He served one year as a truck driver.

The Fred Hart Oral History, 2001, is a typescript of an interview with Fred Hart. The interview focuses primarily on Vietnam experiences, but also covers pre-war and post-war periods.
