LaTain Smith McGhee graduated Knoxville High School in January, 1944 and entered the Navy only eight days later. He served as a radioman mostly on the U.S.S. Lakewood in the Pacific. After the war, he attended the University of Tennessee where he received a B.S. in accounting and a minor in transportation in 1950. From 1950 to 1987, McGhee worked for the Tennessee Valley Authority.
