Biography / History

Frank George Gross, nicknamed "The Saltwater Cowboy," was born on January 12, 1930 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He joined the Marine Corps in 1948, and he and several of his fellow soldiers formed a country band. When the Korean War broke out, he was assigned to the 3rd Battalion of the 7th 1st Division. Gross was seriously injured in the Battle of Chosin Reservoir (also spelled Changjin Reservoir) and evacuated to Philadelphia. He was separated from the Marines on October 31, 1951 and returned to playing country music. He has since written a number of well-received songs about his service in Korea.
