Biography / History

Frazier Harris was born in White County, Tennessee in 1905. He attended Beloit College in Wisconsin and Tennessee Tech, before transferring to UT Knoxville. He graduated in 1932, married the same year, and went on to do graduate work at New York University and the University of Georgia. He taught at several Tennessee high schools, then spent six years as principal at Algood High School in Putnam County.

In 1946, Harris joined the Division of Vocational Rehabilitation, Tennessee Department of Education, as a vocational counselor in the Cookeville Office. In 1958, he moved to Nashville as the Middle Tennessee Regional Director of the program. After retiring in 1974, he began working on the administrative staff as the Director of Planning for Watkins Institute, Nashville. He retired from the position in 1982. At the time of his death in 1992, he was survived by his only daughter, three grandchildren and three step-grandchildren.


Collection Scope and Content Note

This collection consists mainly of an undated, bound typescript titled Vocational Counseling by Frazier Harris. Also in the bound volume are various articles and speeches by Harris in the course of his career and an additional copy of the paper found in Folder 2. In addition, this second folder contains a short biography of Harris and a photocopy of visitation information at the time of his death.
