Biography / History

Reverend Jacob Peter Kefauver (1819-1893), prominent Baptist minister, married Nancy Rieves Cooke (1839-1926) on December 12, 1861. He preached at First Church of Chattanooga, during and following the Civil War, until the death of his father-in-law, when he and his wife moved to Madisonville, TN, to take over the family farm and continue preaching at the local Baptist church. They had four children: Paul Fielding, Nancy Vineyard "Vinnie", Robert Cooke, and Charlotte. Paul married Lucie Cornelia Estes on April 29, 1896. Vinnie married Walter M. Scott on November 24, 1886, and the couple had Warren Fielding (1888-1919), Walter M., and Mary Arwin. Robert (1870-1958) married Phredonia Bradford Estes (1873-1948) on January 14, 1897. The couple had Elizabeth (1897-1901), Robert Fielding, Cary Estes (1903-1963), Nancy Rieves, and Nora Mann.


Collection Scope and Content Note

This collection, the Kefauver Family Papers, 1876-1922, contains three series: correspondence, 1896-1916, which includes 7 letters and postcards mainly to Nancy Rieves Kefauver, primarily from the 1910s, as well as a 1896 wedding announcement for Paul Kefauver and Lucie Estes; articles, 1886-1922, which include 21 items of mainly obituaries for family members and friends or Christian related items, mainly from the 1910s; and other family papers, c. 1910s, which includes hair clippings, photos, Kefauver family tree, and a poem.
