Biography / History

Roane County was established by the General Assembly on November 6, 1801. The county was created from parts of Knox County and was named in honor of Archibald Roane, the second governor of Tennessee.

Anderson County was established by the General Assembly on November 6, 1801. The county was created from portions of both Knox and Grainger counties. The county is named after Joseph Anderson (1757-1837), a former territorial judge in Knoxville and United States Senator who served the state from 1797 until 1815.


Collection Scope and Content Note

This collection contains copies of the petition requests of Knox County residents to create two new counties in East Tennessee from portions of Knox and Grainger counties. The petitions included in this collection were accepted by the General Assembly, which created by legislative act both Anderson and Roane counties on November 6, 1801. The collection includes copies of seven petitions with the names of the signers attached. The bulk of the material is dated 1799, with a single petition dated as "circa 1800."
