Biography / History

The Tennessee Valley Authority is an independent public corporation founded by Congress in 1933 to control flooding, improve navigation, assist farmers, provide cheap electric power, and make surveys of and general plans for the Tennessee River basin and adjoining territory for the general purpose of fostering an orderly and proper physical, economic, and social development of the Tennessee Valley. The TVA Act was signed into law by President Franklin D. Roosevelt on May 18, 1933 as part of the New Deal's First Hundred Days.


Collection Scope and Content Note

This collection contains materials pertaining to the 1983 Tennessee Valley Authority 50th Anniversary Exhibit. Included in this collection are press releases and photographs related to the exhibit as well as information on "The Valley Adventure," a "colorful floating exhibitwhich hosted more than 1.1 million visitors during the 1982 World's Fair" and featured a variety of unique and animated displays that conveyed the history of the Tennessee Valley Authority.
