Garrison's diary spans the years 1898 to July 31, 1902 with the bulk of the passages in reference to the people he met, the places he visited (i.e. Chattanooga, Louisville, Salt Lake City, and San Francisco), and both his schooling and his teaching.

Dr. Amos Rule Garrison (1879-1957) was born February 19, 1879 in Knox County, Tennessee where he attended local schools including Murphy College in Sevierville, Holbrook Normal College, Fountain City, and Maryville College. When he was fourteen-years-old he and his brother contracted anthrax from treating three young horses. The disease left his face somewhat pitted as from smallpox. Dr. Garrison taught school in Knox County until 1900 when ill health awakened an interest in a medical career. He attended Tennessee Medical College for two years and then entered the School of Medicine of the University of Louisville where he graduated in 1904. In May 1905, Dr. Garrison was licensed and he began a successful medical practice. Three years later, he joined the Knox County Medical Board and served as its president in 1942. On May 12, 1912, Dr. Garrison was appointed local surgeon for the Louisville and Nashville Railway overseeing the care of all of their employees between Byington and Granite Station in Anderson County. From 1934 until 1950, he served on the Knox County Board of Education. Dr. Garrison supported both his church and community generously, his last gift being a tract of land at Byington for a library for the community. He bequeathed his library to the Knoxville Academy of Medicine Library and his instruments to the Museum of the Knoxville Academy of Medicine. Dr. Garrison died June 26, 1957, and is buried at Lynnhurst Cemetery in Knoxville, Tennessee.

Dr. Garrison recorded notes on the Epworth League Convention, held July 18-21, 1901 in San Francisco, California in which he elaborated on the religious sessions delivered during the convention; see entries dated July18-August 5, 1901.
