Biography / History

Hinchey Petway of Williamson, Tennessee was possibly a wealthy merchant and a Nolensville Turnpike Company Commissioner who died either September 6 or 13, 1856. Petway was married to Caroline Parrish on October 23, 1807. The first subdivision in Franklin, Tennessee, Hincheyville, was named in honor of Petway, who purchased the land for the purpose of forming a subdivision and reselling it as town lots in 1819.


Collection Scope and Content Note

This collection consists of "a memorandum of monies received by Hinchey Petway" belonging to the state of Tennessee for land in Williamson County. The ledger contains fifty-six pages of entries, documenting the amount of acres and price paid by each individual. The entries span the years 1824 to 1838 with the bulk of the entries recorded prior to 1830. There are several pages of entries entitled "a list of land entered under the Act of 1829."
