Biography / History
Dr. R. B. Rosenburg worked as both as a research assistant professor and assistant editor of the Andrew Johnson Papers Project at the University of Tennessee.
William Walker Ward (b. October 5, 1825-d. April 10 1871) enlisted as a private in the 7th Tennessee Infantry on May 20, 1861 and served in Virginia under General "Stonewall" Jackson. After a medical furlough home to Dixon Springs, Tennessee, Ward joined Morgan's Cavalry. He quickly rose from Sergeant to Captain to Colonel commanding the 9th Tennessee Cavalry. Ward led his regiment in many battles, skirmishes, and raids in Tennessee and Kentucky before he, Morgan, and most of their men were captured during the "Great Northern Raid" across Indiana and Ohio in 1863.

This collection contains research material (photocopies of documents, transcriptions of originals, correspondence, illustrations, and articles) surrounding Dr. R. B. Rosenburg's For the Sake of My Country: The Diary of Col. W. W. Ward, 9th Tennessee Cavalry, Morgan's Brigade, C. S. A. Included in folder 1 are photocopies of documents pertaining to the 9th Tennessee Cavalry, transcriptions of original correspondences, and a "Tribute of Respect to the memory of the Honorable William W. Ward," reported by the Smith County Circuit Court in Carthage, Tennessee. Included in folder 2 are the personal correspondences of Dr. R. B. Rosenburg pertaining to the publication of For the Sake of My Country .
