Biography / History

Charles William Dabney, Jr. (1855-1945) attended Hampden-Sydney College, attained a master's in chemistry in 1877 from the University of Virginia, and completed his doctorate in 1880 at the University of Goettingen in Germany. In 1881 he became director of the North Carolina Experiment Station and was named state chemist, which made him responsible for analyzing chemical fertilizers to combat fraud. Dabney came to the University of Tennessee in 1887 as university president and director of the Agricultural Experiment Station. He opened the university to female students, created the law school and summer school programs, built new laboratories, increased library holdings from 8,000 to 20,000 volumes, and expanded the Department of Agriculture. In 1894 President Grover Cleveland appointed him the assistant secretary of agriculture, returning to UT in 1897. He then accepted the post as president of the University of Cincinnati in 1904.
