Biography / History

Son of Granville Lipscomb, William Lipscomb was born on July 20, 1829 in Franklin County, Tennessee. He graduated from Franklin College in 1848 and began teaching languages there that same year. He started the Gospel Advocate publication with Tolbert Fanning in 1855 and continued with it until the Civil War. Older brother to David Lipscomb, preacher and co-founder of what is now Lipscomb University in Nashville, TN, William was a scholar, writer, and preacher. His father was Bean's Creek Babtist Church clerk.

The Bean's Creek Baptist Church Minute Book, 1814-1876, includes entries from 1814-1815, 1822-1860, and 1868-1876, for the Old Primitive Baptist Church of Bean's Creek, TN. Andrew Woods (1822-23, 1831-36), R.T. Fowler (1823-27), Granville Lipscomb (1828-31), John Woods (1837-1840), Thomas Woods (1840-43), and William C. Lipscomb (1844-1876) recorded the entries as Church Clerks.
