Biography / History

William Bowen Campbell (1807-1867) was a lawyer, soldier, and politician. In 1830 he began his law practice in Carthage, TN. The next year he became the Legislature Attorney-General. He was elected to the House of Representatives in 1835 but resigned to fight as captain in the Seminole War. From 1839 to 1843, Campbell overcame William Trousdale to again serve Congress. Then he fought as colonel in the Mexican War. In 1851, again he defeated Trousdale to become the Governor of Tennessee. At the end of his term, Campbell retired. When the Civil War broke out, the Confederates offered him a Major General's commission; instead Lincoln commissioned him as Brigadier General of Union army volunteers in 1862. After the Civil War and Tennessee's readmission to the Union, Campbell once again served in Congress from 1866 to his death the next year.
