Biography / History
Landon Carter (1760-1800) was a Revolutionary War captain, who also fought alongside John Sevier, a member of the North Carolina General Assembly and the 1796 Tennessee constitutional convention, Secretary of State for the State of Franklin, and a trustee for what are now Washington and Tusculum Colleges. Carter County is named for him, and Elizabethton, the county seat, is named for his wife, Elizabeth MacLin Carter.
