Biography / History

Carson Brewer (1920-2003) attended Maryville College and the University of Tennessee and served during World War II. In 1945, he joined the Knoxville News-Sentinel staff, covering federal beat, city hall, and the courthouse. In 1949, he married journalist Alberta Trulock, who bore his son Carson T. "Kit" Brewer, Jr. He began in the 1950s a weekly column, which expanded to three columns per week. Through this column, he supported local folklore and the region's natural resources. He wrote several books on the Smokies and Tennessee, including one with Alberta, and won several awards for his journalism and conservationism. He retired in 1985 but continued to write for the paper.
