Biography / History

This collection belonged to the Shields Family of Bean Station, Grainger County, Tennessee. It is likely to have belonged to Judge James T. Shields or his family. Judge Shields was born to John and Mary Gill Shields in 1824. His uncles, Samuel and Milton, built the first paper mill established in the south in Grainger Co. and an extensive paper-mill in Hamblen County, TN, around 1830. Judge Shields' son, John Knight Shields (1858-1934), became an attorney, Tennessee Supreme Court Justice, and U.S. Senator.

See the Sen. John K. Shields Collection: Papers, 1841-1948.

Collection Scope and Content Note

This collection is a scrapbook, containing newspaper clippings, kept by the Shields family of Bean Station, TN. The clippings pertain to politics in the local and national arenas, mostly dealing with the Reconstruction Era South and especially (East) Tennessee. There are also several poems, very short biographies, and "interesting facts." Another item is a 1938 article on late politician Robert Love Taylor of Tennessee (some articles in the scrapbook mention him).

Due to the highly acidic nature of the newsprint and scrapbook pages, white buffer pages have been interleaved throughout the scrapbook.
