Biography / History

Benjamin Rush Strong served as the postmaster of Strawberry Plains and as president of Strawberry Plains College during his life. He later moved to Knoxville. The Rush Strong School in Strawberry Plains is the result of an offer he made, providing $1,000 to any community that would name a school after him. When he died in 1915, he left land to the University of Tennessee to build a dorm with two stipulations--it would be a female dorm and a wildflower garden would be maintained. Strong Hall, completed in 1923, is said to be benevolently haunted by the ghost of his mother, Sophie Strong.
