Biography / History
Born April 13, 1778, at Harrisburg, PA, Rev. James King was educated at Middletown, PA. In 1795, he moved with his parents to Jonesboro, TN (Washington County) where he began his studies for the ministry in the Methodist Church. He was placed in charge of a circuit in Kentucky and Ohio in 1806 and was made an elder by Bishop William McKendree on November 7, 1810. Shortly thereafter, he and his wife, Lydia, returned to Tennessee, where they remained for more than twenty years. King was opposed to slavery and presented numerous petitions against it to the Tennessee legislature. He died on March 8, 1849.
