Biography / History
Little is known of Micagor Crews. Records show, however, that on November 17, 1788, a "Micajah" Crews sold a slave named Nancy to Andrew Jackson, then residing in Jonesborough. Nancy was the first slave purchased by Jackson, who owned 150 slaves at the time of his death in 1845.
Collection Scope and Content Note
The Micagor Crews Slavery Documents, 1788, record a case against Crews for possessing stolen slaves. The documents were executed and signed by Richard White, justice of the peace for Washington County, NC. The first document records the complaint against Crews, arguing that he came "in this neighborhood with Two Negroes a fellow & a wench that are stolen from some where the owner yet unknown." White orders local officials to bring the slaves before his court. In the second document, White notes that Crews "appears guilty of said charge" and orders Crews and "the wench Nanci" held in jail until the next session of Washington County's court. This document also notes the names of both of the slaves -- "Jack & Nanci."
