Biography / History

Sampson Williams was an early resident of Middle Tennessee. In 1791, he was granted permission to keep a ferry on the Cumberland River, at the place what would become Fort Blount in 1794 (in what is now Jackson County). After the fort was established, he ran a tavern, in addition to the ferry. In May 1796, he took over as militia captain in charge of the fort. Following Tennessee's admission to the Union, he continued to live in the area, although the guard was disbanded.
