Many of these include references to the Virginia Coal & Iron Co., Virginia Iron, Coal, & Coke Co., Interstate Railroad Co. in Virginia, Interstate Coal & Iron Co. in Virginia, and Looney Creek Railroad Co. in Kentucky.

Biography / History

The Virginia Coal and Iron Company was incorporated in 1882. Its headquarters was located at Big Stone Gap, VA, with a branch office in Philadelphia, PA. The company holdings consisted of 98,510 acres of land in Lee and Wise counties in Virginia and in Harlan County, Kentucky.


Collection Scope and Content Note

In this collection of the Virginia Coal & Iron Company Records, 1883-1915, are two series, contained in separate folders. The first is 22 coal export reports and letters from the Philadelphia Commercial Museum in Philadelphia, PA, to the Virginia Coal & Iron Co. One letter/report dates to November 1899 and three to January 1900, while the rest have no dates. These contain information on the coal and coke industry oversees. The second series contains 15 documents for railroads in the South and Northeast. Many of these include references to the Virginia Coal & Iron Company, Virginia Iron, Coal, & Coke Company, Interstate Railroad Company in Virginia, Interstate Coal & Iron Company in Virginia, and Looney Creek Railroad Company in Kentucky. There are several affidavits and meeting minutes, concerning board member and stockholder meetings, as well as letters and reports dealing with railroad companies' projects. Herein is one item from each of these years: 1883, 1893, 1896, 1900, 1901, and 1913. There are also six from 1914, two 1915, and one undated.

The collection in MS-1700: Virginia Coal and Iron Company Collection, 1879-1910, contains legal documents, relating to land disputes, financial materials, including returned checks, and correspondence mainly between the company and other businesses.
