Biography / History
Charles P. Toncray (1837-1909) was a Republican from Elizabethton, TN. He was a merchant, businessman, and circuit court clerk. In 1901 President William McKinley appointed Toncray as a colonel on his staff. He was also a member of the House of Representatives from 1905-1907.
Collection Scope and Content Note
This collection consists of correspondence to Toncray from 1901 to 1909, a land deed from 1881, and three checks from 1906 written by Toncray. Six of the 14 letters date to 1904, and four to 1908. There is one from each of the following years: 1901, 1905, 1906, and 1909. Six of the letters are from George K. Hamblin about financial matters.
Some letters from Toncray can be located in MS-21: the O.P. Temple Papers, 1832-.
