Biography / History
John Haywood was born in North Carolina in 1762. He served in the lower house of the North Carolina State Senate and as North Carolina's solicitor general and attorney general before joining the State Supreme Court. He resigned in 1800 to defend his friend, North Carolina's Secretary of State, ultimately injuring his own reputation. He returned to private practice and concentrated on working as a legal scholar through his death.
After moving to Tennessee, he served on the Tennessee Supreme Court of Errors and Appeals for a decade. He also began religious and historical writings and research. He died on December 22, 1826.

Manuscript document acknowledging the death of John Haywood, 1826 December 22 Scope Note: Transcription of Document
The court having been informed of the death of the Hon John Haywood, one of the judges of the Supreme Court of the state of Tennessee, and deeming it due to the pre-eminent public services of the deceased, that they should furnish some testimonial of the loss sustained by the state in the death of this distinguished Judge, it is ordered that the court do now adjourn until two o'clock this evening.
