Biography / History

Samuel C. Williams was born in Gibson County, Tennessee, January 15, 1864. After graduating Vanderbilt School of Law, he moved to Johnson City, Tennessee. In 1913, he was appointed to the Tennessee Supreme Court. From 1919 to 1924, he served as the first dean of the Lamar School of Law at Emory University in Atlanta, Georgia, before retiring to Johnson City again. In addition to his career in law, he was also a scholar of Tennessee history, publishing many works on the subject, including History of the Lost State of Franklin. He died on December 14, 1947.


Collection Scope and Content Note

This collection contains a series of letters written by Samuel Cole Williams to his wife during June, 1921. In addition, there is a letter from 1919, offering Williams the deanship of Emory University's School of Law (a position he accepted and held for six years). The first folder consists of ten letters, written as Williams traveled north to take a ship to England. He writes a little of business, but mostly reports to his wife about people he has seen and what he has done. Several of the letters are on Tennessee National Bank letterhead from Johnson City-Williams served as chairman of the board for the bank. The second folder contains the letter from Emory University.

Ten letters from Williams to his wife in Atlanta, 1921 June

Scope Note:

The first six letters are written by Williams traveling through Johnson City, Memphis and New York City, apparently on route to England. Three are written on board the Cunard R. M. S. Carmania. The last comes from Liverpool, after his arrival.
