Biography / History

Chesley Jarnagin (d. 1879) was a farmer in Grainger County. He lived in Knoxville and Clinton, TN, to promote the education of his children. He was a Democrat, not a member of any church, and "noted for his piety and honorable bearing." With his wife Martha Gill Jarnagin, Chesley had five children: Thomas (b. 1835), Chesley G., John J., Spenser Clark, and Henry T. Chesley was the son of Noah Jarnagin and nephew of Chesley Jarnagin of Jefferson County, and of Milton P. Jarnagin. Chesley Jarnagin of Grainger County died at age 72 in Tate's Spring, TN.

Chesley's sons Thomas and John J. founded a general store in Rutledge, TN, in 1857. Later, Chesley G., Thomas and John J.'s brother, also entered the business. After the Civil War, Thomas and his brother Spencer Clark opened a general store in Tate Springs, TN. Later, the fifth brother, Henry T., also joined the family business.
