Biography / History

Dr. Robert Hartman was born Robert Schirokauer in Berlin, Germany, on January 27, 1910. As a young man he taught administrative law and the philosophy of law at the University of Berlin. He also served as Assistant Judge of the District Court, Berlin- Charlottenburg. He was vehemently outspoken against the Nazis and had to flee when they came to power. Hartman changed his name from Robert Schirokauer to the name on his fake passport Robert Hartman to Robert S. (for Schirokauer) Hartman. Hartman started working for Walt Disney Productions as a copyright representative in Britain and opened offices in several Scandinavian nations. He and his wife Rita moved to Mexico City where he represented Disney Productions in Central America and the Antilles.

Hartman and his family moved to the United States in 1941 and became citizens in 1947. He spoke fluent German, French, Swedish, Spanish, and English and read seven additional languages. He became chairman of the Department of Spanish at the Lake Forest Academy in Illinois, where he also taught Philosophy. In 1946, Hartman received his Ph.D. from Northwestern University and began teaching Philosophy in Ohio at the College of Wooster (1945-1948). He taught at Ohio State University (1948-1956), at Massachusetts Institute of Technology (1955-1956), and at Yale (1966). He held more than fifty lectureships in the United States, Canada, Latin America, and Europe. Hartman was a research professor of philosophy at the National University of Mexico from 1956 to about 1969 and at the University of Tennessee from 1968 until his death in 1973.

Robert Ginsberg was born in Brooklyn, New York in 1937. He obtained his bachelor's and master's degrees from the University of Chicago. He completed a Ph.D. in philosophy at the University of Pennsylvania in 1966. Ginsberg served as adjunct professor at Drexel University, Philadelphia, and Temple University, Harrisburg. In 1967, he started teaching at Pennsylvania State University, continued there for 35 years, and then became Professor Emeritus of Philosophy and Comparative Literature. Ginsberg edited several books, including The Critique of War: Contemporary Philosophical Explorations (1969) and The Philosopher as Writer: The Eighteenth Century (1987). He served as editor of the Social Philosophy Research Institute Book Series (SPRIBS), the Jones and Bartlett Philosophy Series, and the Value Inquiry Book Series (VIBS).
