Biography / History
Thomas Hart Benton (1782-1858) was a lawyer, editor, Senator for Missouri (1821-1851, 1853-1855), House Representative, and a Tennessee General Assemblyman. He attended Chapel Hill College (now the University of North Carolina) and William and Mary College's Law School. He moved to St. Louis, MO, where he edited the Missouri Inquirer and practiced law. In the War of 1812, Benton fought alongside General Andrew Jackson.
