Evelyn Scott (1893-1963) was born Elsie Dunn in Clarksville, Tennessee. In 1913, Elsie married Frederick Creighton Wellman, and they changed their names to Evelyn Scott and Cyril Kay-Scott. The couple moved to Brazil, where they had one son in 1914, Creighton "Jigg" Scott. After her divorce from Cyril in 1928, Evelyn married novelist John Metcalfe in 1930. Between 1921 and 1941, she wrote several books, including critically acclaimed The Wave and Eva Gay. After her final book The Shadow of the Hawk failed in 1941, she wrote two more unpublished novels, one of which is mentioned in this collection.

From 1923 to 1969, Elizabeth Ames (1885-1977) was Executive Director of Yaddo - an artist's community, where Evelyn Scott and John Metcalfe worked for a time, and is the dedicatory of Scott's book Eva Gay. She was born in Minneapolis in 1885 and died on March 28, 1977, at Yaddo.

The Evelyn Scott Letters, 1946-1949, contains two letters to Bob Evans concerning Evelyn Scott. The 1946 letter is a short note from Elizabeth Ames of Yaddo in Saratoga Springs, NY, stating she does not know the whereabouts of Evelyn Scott. The 1949 letter is from Evelyn Scott. It is a response to a letter sent by Bob Evans. She discusses the effects of war on finding paper and American novels. Scott also mentions her dissatisfaction with Scribner's for rejecting her book.
