Biography / History
Samuel Cole Williams was born in Gibson County, TN, on January 15, 1864. After graduating Vanderbilt School of Law, he moved to Johnson City, TN. In 1913, he was appointed to the Tennessee Supreme court. From 1919 to 1924, he served as the first dean of the Lamar School of Law at Emory University in Atlanta, GA, before retiring to Johnson City again. In addition to his career in law, he was also a scholar of Tennessee history, publishing many works on the subject, including History of the Lost State of Franklin (1924) and Beginnings of West Tennessee in the Land of the Chickasaws, 1591-1814 (1930). He died on December 14, 1947.
Collection Scope and Content Note
This collection contains handwritten notes taken from the Jackson Gazette issues between 1824 and 1830. In addition are notes from a 1931 letter, three notecards with a long quotation in French and three pages of unidentified quotations. All the information is related to the history of West Tennessee.
