Biography / History
On April 25, 1898 the United States declared war on Spain following the sinking of the U.S.S. Maine in Havana. The war ended with the signing of the Treaty of Paris on December 10, 1898. As a result Spain lost control over Cuba, Puerto Rico, the Philippine islands, and Guam, among other islands.
The United Spanish War Veterans, established in 1904, united several independent Spanish-American War organizations. Military and non-military personnel who served in the Spanish-American War were eligible to become members of the organization. The national level had its headquarters in Washington, D.C.; the state level was called a department; the local level was called a camp. Each year the USWV held annual reunions. By the 1950s, the USWV still had over 3,000 members in 600 local chapters throughout the U.S.
