Biography / History

John Wesley Work II (1872/3-1925) graduated from Harvard University, taught at Fisk University in Nashville, TN, and directed the Fisk Jubilee Singers. He was a musician/composer and fathered John Wesley Work III (1901-1967), also a composer, professor at Fisk University, and leader of the Jubilee Singers.


Collection Scope and Content Note

The John Wesley Work II Papers, 1905-1921, consists of three letters, all pertaining to music. One from 1905 is to the "manager" of the "Fisk Jubilee Singers," while the others are specifically to Professor Work in 1921. One of the 1921 letters is an informal order of copies of songs, and the other letters request the Jubilee Singers or Work's Quartette to perform at their churches.
