Biography / History

No biographical information is known about Eleanor Gillespie. Stones River in Murfreesboro, TN, is a Civil War Battlefield, where the Confederates fought and lost to the Union Army from December 31, 1862 to January 2, 1863. Located here is a Union cemetery with more than 6,000 graves. The U.S. Government turned the area into Stones River National Military Park in 1927.


Collection Scope and Content Note

The Eleanor Gillespie Papers, 1932, include a sermon, prayers, and two letters pertaining to the Stones River National Military Park opening. The letter from Bishop Thomas F. Gailor refers to the prayer at the Park's opening with a photograph of the Bishop attached. Senator Elwin L. Davis's letter discusses the possibility of including the proceedings of the Park's opening in the Congressional Record. A copy of a T. B. Larimore sermon, critiquing popular ideas about the day of crucifixion of Jesus Christ, and the local prayer meeting document with two prayers are included. The only dated documents are the letters from July 1932.
