Biography / History

Chesley Jarnagin (d. 1879) was a farmer in Grainger County. He lived in Knoxville and Clinton, TN, to promote the education of his children. He was a Democrat, not a member of any church, and "noted for his piety and honorable bearing." With his wife Martha Gill Jarnagin, Chesley had five children: Thomas (b. 1835), Chesley G., John J., Spenser Clark, and Henry T. Chesley was the son of Noah Jarnagin and nephew of Chesley Jarnagin of Jefferson County, and of Milton P. Jarnagin. Chesley Jarnagin of Grainger County died at age 72 in Tate's Spring, TN.

Collection Scope and Content Note

The Jarnagin Papers, 1872-1878, is mostly a collection of patent-related materials for Chesley Jarnagin and N. A. Jarnagin and advertisements or business cards collected by the family. Many of the advertisements relate to farm machinery or carriages. Most of the documents do not have partial or exact dates. There are no documents dating between 1873 and 1878.

Seven of the 18 items, found in Series I, mostly pertain to the patents on wagon improvements. Chesley Jarnagin in 1872 had patented several improvements, including one on the improvement of hay and grain racks for wagons and another on the improvement of wagons. These two documents are the original assignments of patents for when Chesley Jarnagin signed over the patent rights to N. A. Jarnagin in 1878. There is also a mounted photograph of the Jarnagins' improved wagon. Also, the only item dated before 1878 is a pamphlet about patents, printed in 1872.

The other eleven items are found in Series II. Eight advertisements or business cards, including one for S. C. Jarnagin, reside herein. Most advertisements are for farm machinery or carriages. Also included is a newspaper clipping of an ode from a horse. The only dates are tentative, except for a receipt from 1872.
