Biography / History
Frances Hodgson Burnett was born in England, November 24, 1849. In 1865, her family, following her father's death, moved to Knoxville, TN, where she began writing to help support her family. She lived both abroad and in the United States over the next three decades. In addition to short stories, she would also produce a number of novels and plays, (among the most famous, Little Lord Fauntleroy (1886), The Little Princess (1905), and The Secret Garden (1910)-all of which appeared in both forms). She settled in Long Island, New York, in 1909 and died there on October 29, 1924.

Handwritten description of the varieties of roses in her garden at Plandome Park, undated Scope Note: Dean Hole. Silvery carmine, shaded salmon, flower large. Variety of great excellence; useful for any purpose. Etoile de France. Velvety crimson, center vivid cerise red; carried on a long crest stem, beautiful foliage. Useful for cutting.
Grace Darling. Creamy white, tinted & shaded with peach, large & very floriferous. Gruss an Tepliz. Brightest scarlet crimson, very free flowering.
[Tillameg]. Flesh shaded white, suffused into pink blooms, large buds long & pointed; fine for massing & forcing. Lyon Rose. Flowers large & globular; petals elegantly formed, the color is a coral red or salmon pink shaded with chrome yellow in the center. Very fragrant & hardy. A truly magnificent rose, absolutely distinct. Madame Jules Groley. Bright, china rose, flowers large & beautiful formed. Very floriferous. Franceska [Truger]. Coppery yellow shaded with peach, large & full, useful for cutting. Madame Lombard. Bright rose, fine form, free blooms.
Marie van Houlter. Canary yellow, deeper center, border of petals tipped with rose.
