Transcription of Letter

Galena Illinois

July 23 1868

Dear Geo,

I am this morning in receipt of Lizzie's school bill for the last half term & herewith enclose it to you. It is rather more than I expected it would be. The charge for sheet music is very extravagant. I have written her that such charges must be stopped. But it is almost impossible to keep a child away from home at school within certain limits. If entirely agreeable you may send me your check for the amount.

We are all comfortable except Mattie who is quite poorly complains of headache and being tired. We are keeping her from school & she is taking some little medicines we hope with good results.

We hope by this time Ellen is very much better. Able to ride out. She must derive benefit from the fresh air outside. If she is able to bear the exercise.

I dont like the looks of things in Washington this morning. The President seems determined to make trouble. He did his best to destroy Grant, defeated them. He now seems determined to fight Congress to the bitter end. He is a bad man and it may be possible that Congress will dispose of him in a summary manner.

Love to your family & all the friends

Yours truly

Chas. L. Stephenson
