Biography / History
W. Dwight Reinhardt rose from the rank of private to captain in his service with the 23rd Tennessee Infantry (C.S.A.). This regiment, organized at Camp Trousdale in Sumner County in August 1861, consisted mainly of men from Maury, Smith, Lawrence, DeKalb, Bedford, Rutherford, Marshall, Perry, Cannon, and Coffee Counties in Middle Tennessee. Prior to its consolidation with the 17th regiment in November 1863, the 23rd Tennessee saw action at Shiloh, Munfordville, and Perryville. As members of B.R. Johnson's Brigade, the regiment also participated in the Battles of Murfreesboro and Chickamauga and was active in the Appomattox Courthouse Campaign.
Collection Scope and Content Note
In a letter from Tupelo, MS, dated July 8, 1862, W. Dwight Reinhardt, then a lieutenant with the 23rd Tennessee Infantry (C.S.A.) writes to his "Dear Cousin Sallie" in Yadkin County, NC, regarding the army's impending move toward Tennessee. He also discusses how he had hoped to "come to N.C. but the conscript came along & I have to stay which I do cherfully [sic]." After briefly passing along stories of a skirmish involving the 4th North Carolina regiment, Reinhardt concludes the letter with a plea for a quick response.
