Biography / History
William L. Walker served as a private with the 10th Tennessee Cavalry, C.S.A. He joined Captain Thomas S. Easley's Company G in August 1864. Most of the soldiers in this company were from Hickman County in Middle Tennessee.
The 10th Tennessee Cavalry was organized in Columbia, TN on February 25, 1863, and was placed under the command of Colonel N.N. Cox. The 10th Tennessee was assigned to guard the Tennessee River and stop Union transportation. Additionally, the regiment saw action throughout East Tennessee (including Knoxville), as well as the Battles of Franklin and Nashville. In February 1865, it joined with the 11th Tennessee Cavalry to form the 10th/11th Consolidated Tennessee Cavalry. This regiment surrendered in Gainesville, AL in May 1865.
Collection Scope and Content Note
In this manuscript dated December 28, 1899, William L. Walker, a former Confederate private, lists the names and current locations (if known) of 42 members of the 10th Tennessee Cavalry, Company G, led by Captain Thomas S. Easley. Walker warns that he did not join the company until August 1864 and that he is providing only the names he can recall.
Walker also writes of Mrs. W.T. Cooper in Nashville who owns a diary kept by W.D. Dorris, who belonged to Col. Campbell's 10th Tennessee, Company H.
