Benjamin F. Sherman entered the service as a 1st Lieutenant in Company M and mustered out as a Captain of Company F of the 10th Michigan Cavalry.

Post-dated receipt No. 5 Abstract of Quartermaster Stores for 112 lbs of corn for 45 horses that had been invoiced to B.F. Sherman in voucher No. 2 Abstract while serving as 1st Lieutenant Co. M of the 10th Michigan Cavalry in the month of January 1864 "during a five day stay in Knoxville, Tennessee shortly after the siege by Longstreet"
