Biography / History

Henry Colvin was born in approximately 1841 in Michigan. At the time of the 1860 census, he was working as a clerk for grocer Kelly Beals in Adrian, Michigan along with several other young people. He mustered into the Company C of the 18th Michigan Volunteer Infantry on August 26, 1862 at the age of 21. He served with this unit until March 24, 1864, when he left to accept the rank of 1st Lieutenant and the position of Adjutant in the 12th Tennessee Cavalry. He remained in that post until May 24, 1865, when he accepted a promotion to Captain and the position of Assistant Adjutant General under George Spaulding. As of 1883, Colvin was receiving a pension of $4.25 per month in Adrian, Michigan, as a result of a wound to his left arm. Unfortunately, no information is available about him beyond this point.

Researchers should note that there seems to be some confusion regarding the correct spelling of Colvin's name. Variations include Hervey Colvin and Hervey Cobin. The accepted spelling seems to be Hervey Colvin.
