Collection Scope and Content Note

This collection contains a July 14, 1863 letter from "Willie," a Confederate soldier serving in Company D of the 1st Alabama Cavalry under Captain J. A. Whiting. He writes concerning a pony that he had purchased to send home to Gus and Tate and about his newly acquired horse. He explains the difficulties of cavalry life, how he misses the corn, watermelon and peaches of home and the discouragement felt among the troops in the retreat from Tennessee. Wishing to be at home, he explains a scheme that might allow him to gain a furlough. Willie writes about hearing of the death of Ed Ellis and seeing some friends in the Alabama 34th Regiment. He asks Henrie to express his regrets to his mother and father for not writing. Several times Willie mentions missing his children and Narcessa and he is convinced that "it is wasting breath to ask (Evan) to write."
