Biography / History
In researching for more information of the persons that Lide wrote about such as Julius C. Bostwick with two sons, it was found that he received his commission, as a first Lieutenant on January 28th 1863 for Company G of the 113th Ohio Infantry Regiment. He died in Columbus, Ohio of disease on the 15th of March 1864. In the 1860 United States Federal Census Carter Bostwick is 16 and working on a farm as a laborer belonging to Belden Williams. Near this farm is a family whose head of household is Oliver Bostwick. [William H. Bostwick], known as Tipp, who was killed at the Battle of Stone's River (a.k.a. The Battle of Murphresboro) served in the 13th Regiment, Ohio Infantry Company B. He mustered in as a corporal and died as a sergeant.
Collection Scope and Content Note
For some individuals during the Civil War, time spent at home with one parent, usually the mother, was the norm. Lide Bostwick may not have been on the front lines but she concerned herself with her family and the death of relatives. The war was not the only source of facing the reality of death. Disease and aging caused people to lose loved ones. In her letter to friends, she explains the death and burial of Abigail. Tip was killed at the Battle of Murfreesboro and she had great concern for Julius who was the father of two boys and serving in the 113th Ohio Regiment. Carter is working on a farm. She expresses apprehension over the harm that northern traitors are causing, perhaps even more than the southern rebels
