Biography / History

Originally known as Emergency Conservation Work, the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) was established in April of 1933 as part of President Franklin D. Roosevelt's New Deal. The program enrolled unemployed and unmarried men between the ages of 17 and 23 and put them to work conserving such natural resources as timber, water, and soil. Workers lived in camps (usually administered by the War Department) and were paid a base rate of $30.00 per month. Congress voted to abolish the program over Roosevelt's objections in June of 1942, and the president issued an official order for liquidation about six months later.
