Arrangement

Collection consists of two boxes divided into three series: Taped Interviews, Miscellaneous Research Material, and Coast Guard Files on Alex Haley.


Biography / History

Anne Romaine, a well-known Southern folksinger, was the official biographer of Alex Haley. She met Haley while she worked for the Haley House Museum in Henning, Tennessee. Romaine received her masters in history from UVA and completed all the course work on a Ph. D. at Vanderbilt. Romaine was, also co-founder and director of the Southern Folk Cultural Revival Project and the producer of a PBS cultural series. In 1995, Anne Romaine went to the emergency room in pain, but when not treated within what she considered sufficient time, she went home. Her appendix burst, causing peritonitis and death. Her biography of Haley was uncompleted.


Collection Scope and Content Note

This collection contains the interviews conducted by Anne Romaine about Alex Haley and other research material on him. Box 1 contains 58 separate audiotapes of interviews Romaine conducted during her research. They are arranged chronologically. Box 2 contains the complete United States Coast Guard file on Haley's career in the organization and the complete Alex Haley House Museum Catalogue Book.
